Avec Le Mariage de Figaro de Beaumarchais,le valet de comédie touche à son apogée dans ce plaisir renouvelé de facéties verbales à lancer à la face des maîtres. Or, les grondements de la Révolution française vont bientôt bousculer les ex-grands de l’ancien monde sans épargner leurs serviteurs zélés. Il n’en a pas fallu davantage pour que le dramaturge allemand d’origine austro-hongroise, Ödön von Horvath, récupère dans Figaro divorce la figure insolente et fanfaronne du valet pour la réajuster à l’Europe chaotique des années 30. Que va devenir Figaro avec Suzanne ? Exilé, il s’installe à son compte comme coiffeur dans une bourgade aux valeurs étriquées : lâcheté, hypocrisie et préjugés xénophobes. Le couple se sépare à la demande de Suzanne, attachée à son confort d’antan et souffrant de l’obstination de Figaro à ne pas vouloir d’enfant. Si effectivement Figaro divorce, c’est qu’il rompt avec un certain romantisme, l’attachement sentimental aux plaisirs humbles des paradis terrestres. Figaro divorce plutôt de Rousseau, des Lumières et de leur attention rayonnante à la dimension sociale de la vie.
La perte des illusions
Le valet de jadis travaille égoïstement pour lui-même et raisonne en individu aux mœurs bien bourgeoises, tenant à distance son optimisme légendaire : « Une seule solution : il faut choisir. L’honnêteté ou la débrouillardise. Moi j’ai choisi. » La scène est un chatoiement spatial et chronologique ; elle révèle un Figaro raisonnable revenu d’exil ( Michel Vuillermoz), orateur aux discours populistes flattant les sentiments de son auditoire pour en gagner les faveurs. La mise en scène de Jacques Lassalle analyse avec tact ces désenchantements que réserve l’Histoire, la perte des illusions et du charme revivifiant des enthousiasmes. L’atmosphère révèle des temps difficiles avec les unités paramilitaires, époque d’uniformes et de chemises de couleur, noires ou brunes. L’humeur chagrine de la tendre Suzanne (Florence Viala) sied à l’ensemble de la fresque qui ne distingue qu’avec peine le retour de l’espoir depuis les ténèbres. Or, Figaro aime toujours sa belle. Et le majestueux Almaviva (Bruno Raffaelli) ne peut se départir de sa noblesse. Le « révolutionnaire » Pédrille (Thierry Hancisse) se voit « remis à sa place » par Figaro. Les clairs-obscurs de l’âme résistent aux idéologies et les ombres et les lumières font écho à l’énigme humaine. Un spectacle rare et grave.
