Aux échecs, les fins de partie, restreintes à des coups limités, sont les derniers instants où entre attaque et défense, sont évalués la nécessité et le prix du coup juste. Cette vue existentielle est poussée à son comble par les partenaires de Fin de partie (1957), des cadors de la parole et du plateau, aptes à jouer la partition dramaturgique beckettienne, une musique mi-figue mi-raisin aux accents funèbres implicites, « Fini, c’est fini, ça va finir, ça va peut-être finir », dit l’un, à l’autre qui reprend : « J’hésite encore à en finir … Pourquoi ne me tues-tu pas ? » Le spectateur subjugué écoute Hamm, infirme et aveugle, interprété par Serge Merlin à la voix ténébreuse d’outre-tombe, un tyran vissé à son fauteuil. Le maître abuse des services de Clov, victime lucide et valide quoiqu’il ne puisse s’asseoir, incarné par Jean-Quentin Châtelain, bourré de tics, plié en deux par un mal de dos chronique. Dans cet enfermement grisâtre aux murs aveugles que troue dans les hauteurs une lucarne latérale, accessible uniquement par un escabeau – l’une avec vue sur la mer et l’autre avec vue sur la terre -, vivent encore les parents de Hamm, installés dans leur poubelle respective, des culs-de-jatte délaissés, Nagg (Michel Robin) et Nell (Isabelle Sadoyan). Le huis-clos improbable de ces personnages évoque leur impossibilité à assumer la solitude tout autant que la compagnie des hommes.
Présence de l’être
Au-delà du handicap physique des corps malades et vieillis et de l’âme blessée, ne reste que le verbe qui inscrit l’ultime présence au monde : « Pourquoi cette comédie de tous les jours ?… Réfléchissez, vous êtes sur terre, c’est sans remède … Rien n’est plus drôle que le malheur. » Les personnages tragi-comiques se donnent la réplique. Pour les uns, la vie est faite de l’étoffe des songes shakespeariens ; pour les autres, elle ne serait rien et la mort serait tout. Or, la vie contient confusément la mort. L’homme éprouve du repentir pour le passé, de l’ennui pour le présent et de la crainte pour l’avenir. « La mort est la providence de ceux qui auront le goût et le don du fiasco … » (Cioran). Si le sentiment de l’échec est une valeur récurrente dans l’existence, le discours et la méditation mettent à distance la douleur et la souffrance des revers éprouvés, des calculs déjoués et des espérances trompées. Dans l’expérience de la déception, l’expression se rapproche de sa vérité intime. Beckett sollicite sans cesse cette présence de l’être pour la révéler à la conscience. Et paradoxalement, l’amour de la vie est le ressort caché de ce désenchantement des voix qui, une fois formulé, est consolation. Que veux-tu qu’il y ait à l’horizon ? Le cheminement vers la « sortie » tandis que la vie continue. Clov entreprend un départ, une valise de comédien à la main. Un voyage qui fait échec et mat. Peut-être.
