On le connaît autant pour ses rôles au cinéma (notamment dans les films de son frère Bruno) qu’au théâtre (il a été nommé en 2000 sociétaire de la Comédie-Française). Depuis quelques années, le vibrionnant Denis Podalydès s’est également lancé dans la mise en scène, notamment avec un Cyrano de Bergerac d’anthologie dans la salle Richelieu. Mais la musique semblait jusqu’alors totalement absente de son parcours. La saison dernière, il s’est associé à un concert du pianiste Pierre-Laurent Aimard durant lequel il lisait, avec justesse, des extraits d’Etre sans destin d’Imre Kertész. Un premier signe ? En ce mois de décembre, il fait en tout cas ses débuts comme metteur en scène d’opéra, dans Fortunio, une comédie lyrique composée par André Messager d’après Le Chandelier d’Alfred de Musset. « Je sors de la mise en scène de Fantasio à la Comédie-Française. L’univers de Musset m’est donc bien familier ! En ce qui concerne Fortunio, je dois cependant dire que je préfère maintenant l’opéra et son livret très inventif à la pièce originale », nous confie Denis Podalydès.
Fortunio, le retour
Créé à l’Opéra Comique en 1907, Fortunio relate l’histoire d’un jeune garçon qui doit jouer au « chandelier », c’est-à-dire séduire ouvertement une femme pour que son mari ne se doute pas de l’identité des vrais amants. « Il y a dans l’opéra un esprit Belle époque, à la fois séduisant et grinçant. J’ai demandé à Eric Ruf qu’il suggère dans les décors une ville provinciale de l’Est de la France, il vient lui-même de Belfort, où les amours seraient contraints par le froid. Pour les costumes, Christian Lacroix s’est également inspiré du début du XXème siècle pour arriver à des silhouettes qui épurent les lignes Belle époque », poursuit Denis Podalydès. Met-on en scène de la même manière au théâtre et à l’opéra ? « Au théâtre, jusqu’à la dernière répétition, on essaie de trouver le bon rythme, c’est ce qu’il y a de plus difficile. Or à l’opéra, le rythme est donné immédiatement par la musique. Cela change beaucoup de choses », explique Denis Podalydès. Sa deuxième mise en scène d’opéra est déjà prévue : ce sera l’opéra bouffe Don Pasquale de Donizetti au Théâtre des Champs-Elysées en 2012.
