Charles Juliet1, qui rencontra Samuel Beckett à plusieurs reprises de 1968 à 1977, le décrit comme un être d’une « absolue simplicité », « quelqu’un d’essentiellement différent », « un homme supérieur (…), qui se tient au plus bas, dans l’intimité d’une permanente interrogation sur le fondamental ». De bien des façons, les cinq Fragments présentés par Peter Brook (Rough for theatre 1, Rockaby, Act without words 2, Neither et Come and go) rejoignent la grandeur de cette simplicité singulière. Une simplicité qui porte en soi une forme de consentement existentiel, une conscience du monde et de la condition humaine extrêmement profonde, étonnamment aiguë. Eclairé par la révélation d’un « savoir très étroit sur lui-même », Samuel Beckett sortit, un jour de 19452, de « la litanie de ce qu’il ne [devait] pas faire » pour pleinement consentir « à sa faiblesse, à sa bêtise, à sa limite ». Il trouva alors la voie d’une œuvre magistrale, œuvre faite de silences et de mots dévoilant toute l’intensité, toute la radicalité de l’invisible.
Une interrogation permanente sur le fondamental
Cet invisible, dont l’ampleur n’a d’égale que l’acuité, Jos Houben, Kathryn Hunter et Marcello Magni l’investissent aujourd’hui à travers une drôlerie et une clairvoyance rares. Une drôlerie et une clairvoyance qui, de texte en texte, conduisent à des troubles surprenants. Car les trois comédiens choisis par Peter Brook font preuve d’une grande puissance et d’une grande sensibilité. Ainsi, parfois, le temps semble se suspendre, à l’occasion d’une Berceuse (Rockaby) que Kathryn Hunter sculpte de sa voix et de sa présence absolument bouleversantes. Parfois, les visages et les corps savent se passer de mots, Jos Houben et Marcello Magni s’emparant d’Acte sans paroles II (Act without words 2) à travers une intelligence et une virtuosité comique imposantes. Faisant en permanence osciller ses interprètes entre gravité et dérision, lucidité et légèreté, Peter Brook a conçu un spectacle sans artifices, un spectacle dépouillé qui parvient à atteindre l’essence de ce qui constitue l’unicité et la grandeur des écrits de Samuel Beckett. Il ne faut pas manquer ces cinq fragments de vie et de théâtre : des fragments de rire, de saisissements, d’étonnements et d’émois.
