Il est chez lui à Avignon, dans ce temple du théâtre, lui qui a parcouru le monde avec des metteurs en scène de la trempe de Peter Brook ou Pippo Delbono. Mais c’est autour d’une proposition musicale que Francesco Agnello, ex-lauréat du Prix Villa Médicis, s’installe dans le Off, pour partager sa passion avec un instrument étrange aux allures de soucoupe volante : le Hang. Encore mal connu du public mélomane et des compositeurs, cet instrument moderne a vu le jour en Suisse il y a une vingtaine d’années au sein de la société PANArt Hangbau AG. Le « hang » – le mot signifie « main » en dialecte bernois – réalise une sorte de synthèse riche d’incroyables possibilités sonores entre de nombreux instruments de percussion du monde entier comme le gong, le gamelan, la scie musicale ou la cloche. La rencontre de Francesco Agnello avec le Hang fut une révélation : « Cet instrument procure des vibrations qui touchent le sensible, l’imaginaire, et il apporte grâce aux harmoniques une ouverture plus grande aux sens. » explique-t-il. Improvisations et compositions originales sont au programme de cette série de récitals en entrée libre, joués à la nuit tombée, parfois entourés d’invités. Un moment suspendu de poésie et de partage musicaux, au cœur de la frénésie avignonnaise.
