Du cliché de la mère juive, la mère de Romain Gary coche toutes les cases : rêve de grandeur, amour fou, foi inconditionnelle pour son fils… Quelle est la part réellement autobiographique de La Promesse de l’aube, ce roman de 1960 dont le succès ne s’est jamais démenti ? Difficile à dire de la part du maître de la mystification littéraire, qui sous le pseudonyme d’Emile Ajar réussit à remporter deux fois le prix Goncourt. Pour le comédien Franck Desmedt, « la performance de cette adaptation théâtrale est moins dans l’incarnation successive de la quinzaine de personnages qui traversent le spectacle, que dans la restitution de cet amour impossible, pierre angulaire de l’œuvre. »
