« L’énergie » : le mot revient souvent dans la bouche de Franck Tortiller quand on lui demande d’expliciter son irrésistible attirance pour les orchestres XXL. Car si cette soirée au New Morning verra se suivre deux de ses grands ensembles, le penchant du vibraphoniste pour les big bands ne date pas d’hier. « Mon père était musicien de jazz amateur. J’ai donc été bercé par les bals musette comme par les grands orchestres de Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Stan Kenton… Dans le jazz, ce qui est important, ce n’est pas ce qu’on joue, mais comment on le joue. » La notion de « son de groupe » : voilà le beau souci qui régit sa démarche musicale depuis toujours. Si ce concert présente sa nouvelle création, « Le rythme et le bleu », conçu comme un hommage singulier au rhythm’n’blues avec ses musiciens fétiches (ceux qu’il dirigea à la tête de l’Orchestre National de Jazz), il sera aussi et peut-être surtout l’occasion de présenter un autre projet qui lui tient à cœur : l’Orchestre des Jeunes Jazzmen de Bourgogne. « Lorsque les jeunes étudiants sortent du Conservatoire et veulent entrer dans le circuit professionnel, il n’y a aucune structure pour leur mettre le pied à l’étrier. » Du coup, Franck Tortiller a recruté des talents naissants aux quatre coins de la France et leur a demandé d’écrire leurs propres pièces. Cet esprit de transmission constitue pour lui le nerf de la guerre : « le jazz est une musique où la tradition orale est capitale. On ne l’apprend pas dans des cours magistraux, ça doit passer par le concert et le jeu. ». Une expérience pédagogique unique à rapprocher des projets d’orchestres symphoniques de jeunes dans le domaine de la musique classique.
