On ignore si Napoléon aimait ou non véritablement la musique. Il contribua en tout cas, dans la première décennie du XIXème siècle, à réogarniser et dynamiser de manière remarquable la vie musicale parisienne, et l’on sait que ses goûts le portaient plutôt vers la musique et l’opéra italiens. Napoléon attira par exemple à Paris le compositeur Giovanni Paisiello ou encore le grand castrat Crescentini (1762- 1846), véritable star européenne à son époque pour lequel les plus grands compositeurs de son temps ont écrit. Crescentini a souvent été à l’honneur des soirées aux Tuileries et l’Empereur l’admirait profondément. D’où son surnom de « Castrat de Napoléon » qui a donné son titre à son concert exceptionnel à l’Opéra Royal. C’est le grand contre-ténor argentin Franco Fagioli qui entrera dans le personnage et le répertoire de Crescentini, accompagné par l’Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal dirigé par Stefan Plewniak. Fagioli chantera des Airs de Giulietta e Romeo de Zingarelli, l’opéra préféré de Napoléon (enregistré par les mêmes interprètes pour le label Château de Versailles Spectacles), et un florilège d’airs de bravoure du premier bel canto. Attention : prix des places très élevé, presque aussi haut que la voix de Crescentini !
