« On me demande très souvent de parler de Jean-Luc Lagarce, de dire comment il était, de livrer des anecdotes à son propos. La difficulté que j’ai à répondre à ce genre de demandes m’a donné l’idée de créer une représentation grâce à laquelle le public pourrait, en quelque sorte, l’entendre lui-même raconter certains épisodes de son existence, comme lors des conversations que j’avais avec lui ou qu’il avait avec d’autres. J’ai donc sélectionné certains passages de son Journal — qui commence en 1977, au moment de la création du Théâtre de la Roulotte, et qui se termine une semaine avant son décès —, passages qui m’ont semblé les plus intéressants, les plus représentatifs de l’homme qu’il était. Car j’assume totalement l’idée d’avoir travaillé sur sa personnalité, sur son univers. Le projet scénique est d’ailleurs assez simple : c’est dire que Jean-Luc est là, sur scène, qu’il est en train de taper son journal sur la machine à écrire qui lui appartenait, installé à son vrai bureau, entouré de ses propres livres, tout en parlant aux spectateurs.
L’écriture comme seule réalité
Le Journal de Jean-Luc Lagarce se prête particulièrement bien à cet exercice, car il est écrit de façon très dynamique. En effet, dans ces pages, au-delà de sa disparition, Jean-Luc apostrophe le lecteur, s’adresse à lui avec souvent beaucoup d’humour, sans pourtant savoir si un jour ce lecteur existera. Cet humour dévastateur, Laurent Poitrenaux (NDLR : qui incarne l’écrivain sur scène) et moi-même tenions absolument à le retransmettre. Mais, fondamentalement, ce qui m’intéresse dans cet Ebauche d’un portrait, c’est avant tout l’objet théâtral, la mise en abyme de la parole de Jean-Luc et non Jean-Luc lui-même. Car, en fait, seule l’écriture est capable de rendre du réel, de la véracité, pas la mémoire ou le souvenir. Le public croit que la réalité est dans ce que dit Jean-Luc Lagarce, alors qu’elle réside ailleurs : dans son processus d’écriture, dans la forme qu’il emploie, dans la littérature à laquelle il a donné naissance. »
