Musicien discret mais essentiel de la scène jazz française, le pianiste François Couturier (né en 1950) a signé en 2006 un retour marquant en qualité de leader, avec la parution chez ECM d’un disque exceptionnel évoquant l’univers d’Andrei Tarkovski : « Nostalghia – Songs for Tarkovski ». Le point de départ du projet est sa fascination pour le grand réalisateur russe. « Andrei Tarkovski est mon cinéaste préféré, confie Couturier. « Andrei Roublev » fut pour moi une révélation. J’ai depuis vu et revu ses 7 films. Ce sont de longs poèmes d’une lenteur hypnotique, emprunts de spiritualité. Je ne voulais, en aucun cas, faire une musique illustrative mais représenter dans chaque morceau une émotion particulière liée à l’univers de ce cinéaste… ». Souvent éloignée du jazz au sens propre du terme, la musique de « Nostalghia » est d’abord l’œuvre d’un compositeur et d’un poète du clavier, traversée de silences, d’images et de mirages. Un écho magnifique et limpide à la fascinante poésie plastique des images du cinéaste projetées au cours du concert. Avec Anja Lechner (violoncelle), Jean-Marc Larché (sax soprano), Jean-Louis Matinier (accordéon) et le fils du réalisateur, pour le choix des extraits de films.
