Après « Phèdre ! » et « Gisèle …», fidèle au principe qui a fait reposer les deux précédentes créations sur un coup de cœur lié à une rencontre, François Gremaud, conçoit une réduction sur mesure de l’œuvre de Bizet pour Rosemary Standley, « non parce qu’elle serait une Carmen » explique-t-il, « mais parce que dans son art, elle se réapproprie les grandes chansons avec une liberté qui s’apparente à celle du personnage ». À cet égard, le point qui ponctue le titre de la pièce, ainsi différenciée de l’œuvre originale, est également significatif : « Il traduit ce que je cherche dans cette pièce ; quand Gisèle et Phèdre sont soumises à une sorte de destin, Carmen est profondément libre ». En point de mire : la joie, cette force vitale.
