Comment envisagez-vous votre installation à l’Aquarium ?
François Rancillac : J’ai été nommé le 12 mars dernier à la tête de ce lieu dont le statut est très particulier puisque c’est une compagnie avant d’être un théâtre. Comme tous les lieux de la Cartoucherie, endroit historiquement investi par des compagnies, l’Aquarium est un lieu de création. Il l’a toujours été et j’y tiens mais ce n’est pas un lieu qui va s’enfermer sur mes œuvres. Je veux qu’il reste ouvert aux autres. Ce pourquoi j’ai choisi de travailler avec un metteur en scène associé, Antoine Caubet.
Pourquoi ce choix ?
F. R. : J’ai toujours travaillé en binôme. Je n’aurais jamais dirigé la Comédie de Saint-Etienne seul et j’ai envie de continuer à travailler dans le dialogue. Antoine Caubet est quelqu’un que j’estime autant humainement qu’artistiquement. Il sera là six jours sur sept. On partagera le même bureau. L’Aquarium sera aussi sa maison de création. Cette saison, nous faisons chacun une reprise et une création et ensuite nous ferons chacun une création annuelle. Je suis directeur donc c’est moi qui tranche et insuffle la politique de la maison mais il n’y a pas une question importante qui ne soit dialoguée.
Comment allez-vous accueillir la création ?
F. R. : L’Aquarium est une maison pauvre. On croit à tort qu’elle fonctionne comme un CDN ou un théâtre subventionné. La convention de la compagnie s’élève à 644 000 euros par an. Une fois payés les petits salaires de la petite équipe (sept permanents), l’eau et le chauffage, il reste 90 000 euros de marge artistique, donc même pas de quoi faire un spectacle… J’accueillerai les compagnies à la recette, ce que je trouve indigne… Pour nos créations, il va falloir trouver des partenaires coproducteurs ou des aides. La misère s’ajoute à la misère. C’est d’autant plus dommage que c’est un outil magnifique.

Comment envisagez-vous les rapports avec les autres lieux de la Cartoucherie ?
F. R. : Dès mon arrivée, j’ai commencé de dialoguer avec eux pour lutter contre l’enfermement du quant-à-soi. Le festival des écoles, organisé pendant la deuxième quinzaine de juin, est le signe d’une volonté de projets partagés. En ce moment, nous accueillons la troupe afghane qu’accompagne le Théâtre du Soleil. Dans chaque théâtre, une affiche rendra visible les programmations des autres lieux et nous avons le projet de créer un journal avec la Mairie du 12ème qui valorise « l’idée » Cartoucherie.
Quel esprit voulez-vous donner à l’Aquarium ?
F. R. : Nous avons deux salles qui ne peuvent pas fonctionner en même temps. Nous allons donc en profiter pour organiser, à côté des spectacles, des répétitions, de la formation professionnelle et amateur. Je veux que l’Aquarium soit un lieu d’essais et de recherche. En invitant des collègues metteurs en scène, en permettant à des acteurs de travailler, en plongeant ensemble dans l’œuvre des grands théoriciens, en échangeant sur nos pratiques et nos fragilités, en découvrant des textes inédits lors des « lundis en coulisse », en provoquant des rencontres, en interrogeant l’écriture dramatique depuis le plateau… En organisant des débats comme celui du 7 octobre sur l’éducation artistique… En inventant aussi des petites formes itinérantes pour aller chercher les gens qui ne vont pas au théâtre. En travaillant avec les relais, les profs, les animateurs sociaux, les gens qui dans les comités d’entreprises et les syndicats croient encore à la culture…
Vous entamez cette saison placée sous le signe des « histoires d’amour » avec Zoom.
F. R. : Zoom est l’objet idéal pour donner la couleur de ce que je veux faire à l’Aquarium : un théâtre populaire et généreux qui a le goût des mots. Quant au thème de la saison, il relie ce projet et celui d’Antoine qui monte Partage de midi : deux œuvres qui parlent de la passion et des amours qui font mal ! Une saison thématique est le moyen de la cohérence, du sens et de la lisibilité. Et puis, c’est une belle façon d’ouvrir cette saison et cette installation que de l’ouvrir avec l’amour au fronton !
