Le théâtre de Victor Hugo est, de nos jours, assez rarement représenté sur scène. Qu’est-ce qui vous a amené à vous intéresser au Roi s’amuse ?
François Rancillac : Lorsque j’étais étudiant, j’ai eu une grande période d’hugolâtrie. Un de mes professeurs aimait beaucoup cet auteur et, sous son influence, j’ai exploré son œuvre de façon très approfondie. Parmi ses différentes pièces, j’ai toujours eu une tendresse particulière pour Le Roi s’amuse. C’est une pièce finalement assez mal construite, très hétéroclite, mais qui me touche beaucoup. Le fait qu’elle creuse de façon particulière le thème de la filiation, de la transmission, établit des liens évidents avec notre actualité.
Quelles sont, de votre point de vue, les principales spécificités de ce théâtre ?
Fr. R. : Le théâtre de Victor Hugo fait se frotter de façon très étonnante modernité et tradition. Il réinvestit les formes qui l’ont précédé, les pousse à bout jusqu’à ce qu’elles implosent. Ce procédé est particulièrement clair dans la langue qu’il emploie. On trouve en effet des vers flamboyants, en tous points respectueux des conventions classiques et, subitement, on en arrive à une langue triviale, haletante, totalement concassée. Victor Hugo écrit sur un monde ancien pour accoucher d’un monde nouveau. Son théâtre est un théâtre excessif, un « théâtre Cocotte minute » qui ne peut que finir par exploser.

A travers les mœurs de la cour de François 1er, Le Roi s’amuse dresse le portrait d’une société très sombre, une société sans repères et sans idéaux. Quelle est pour vous la portée politique de cette œuvre ?
Fr. R. : C’est justement l’absence de politique qui se situe au cœur du Roi s’amuse. Car cette pièce présente une jeunesse totalement désorientée qui – qu’elle fasse partie de la noblesse ou des couches les plus basses de la société – n’agit que dans le présent, selon ses instincts immédiats, sans jamais se référer au passé ou se projeter dans une quelconque forme d’avenir. Elle se contente de jouir, de consommer, s’accroche au profit, aux paillettes, à tout ce qui brille. L’absence de père et de transmission peut sans doute expliquer l’attitude aveugle et vaine de ces jeunes gens. Le Roi s’amuse est avant tout un drame de la filiation, ou plutôt, de l’absence de filiation, thème qui traverse toute l’œuvre de Victor Hugo.
A travers quel cadre esthétique avez-vous souhaité faire résonner cette pièce ?
Fr. R. : Mon équipe et moi-même (ndlr, la scénographie est de Raymond Sarti, les costumes sont de Sabine Siegwalt) nous sommes amusés à remixer de multiples références esthétiques – le XVIème siècle, le XIXème siècle, le XXIème siècle… – pour donner naissance à un monde du « bling-bling » et de la fête, un monde de boîte de nuit fait de miroirs, de paillettes, de boules à facettes… Ce monde de divertissement permanent est celui d’une jeunesse totalement désœuvrée.
Face à cette jeunesse, Victor Hugo place deux pères, dont Triboulet, personnage central du Roi s’amuse. Pourquoi avoir choisi Denis Lavant pour interpréter ce rôle ?
Fr. R. : J’ai toujours eu une très grande admiration pour Denis Lavant. Pour interpréter Triboulet, j’avais besoin d’un comédien pouvant incarner le pire et le meilleur, pouvant être à la fois le plus ignoble et le plus bouleversant des hommes. Denis Lavant possède cette profondeur et cette dualité. Et puis, pour jouer le théâtre d’Hugo, il faut un comédien capable d’assumer sa grandiloquence et sa dimension mélodramatique. Denis Lavant croit en l’incarnation, en la théâtralité. Il n’essaie jamais de jouer au plus intelligent sur le plateau. Il se met au service du texte et de son personnage de façon excessivement généreuse. C’est vraiment un régal de travailler avec un artiste comme lui.
