Guitariste et chanteur, François Staal emprunte au son de l’Amérique voyageuse des canyons, « le mythe d’un meilleur ailleurs », tout en défendant jalousement le fait de chanter en français. «Ma démarche n’est pas dans l’immédiateté ; je cherche l’équilibre, que la musique porte les textes sans chercher à être consensuel. La poésie peut vraiment être rock. » François Staal n’est pas un provocateur, mais son style est tranquillement dérangeant, volontairement lancinant. On retrouve dans son album – outre les titres écrits par Staal – du Baudelaire, et des textes de Jean Fauque, entre autres parolier de Bashung, dont on retrouve l’âme enveloppante et hypnotique.
Des chemins de traverse à l’Olympia
Staal nourrit cette poésie d’un vrai plaisir de la scène, où l’intensité se cache derrière une certaine retenue. « Après avoir tourné dans énormément de petites salles, la progression vers une autre étape se dessine. Ce n’est pas un hasard si je fais l’Olympia, j’ai envie de rentrer en communication avec une certaine tradition artistique. » François Staal aime le cheminement, la quête plus que l’arrivée, ce tracé mouvant de l’homme qui cherche.
