Bien connu du monde du jazz français pour avoir dirigé le Département jazz et musiques improvisées du CNSM de Paris, François Théberge (né à Montréal en 1963) reste pourtant un artiste rare sur les scènes françaises et peu connu du public. Poursuivant une démarche initiée en 2002 avec l’album « Music of Konitz », il signe aujourd’hui avec « Soliloque » (qui paraît chez Cristal) une relecture inspirée de la musique de Konitz mais aussi, comme en écho, son prolongement à travers une série de brillantes compositions de sa main renvoyant parfois à l’esprit des sessions de l’historique « Birth of the Cool » de Miles Davis (avec Konitz) en 1949. Théberge rassemble ici un quintet de libres-penseurs composé de Stéphane Belmondo (trompette), Jerry Edwards (trombone), Paul Imm (contrebasse) et Alan Jones (batterie) augmenté par le légendaire Lee Konitz (saxophones alto et soprano) himself en invité permanent. Immanquable aussi, la veille, Lee Konitz sera sur la même scène à la tête d’un trio composé d’Enrico Pieranunzi au piano et Riccardo Del Fra à la contrebasse (le 28).
