Pourquoi ce choix, à première vue surprenant, de La Dame aux camélias ?
Frank Castorf : J’aime faire des projets où l’amour et la rage cohabitent, et j’ai déjà beaucoup travaillé sur des textes de cette fin de la première moitié du XIXe, marquée par la révolution de 1848, le régime d’opérette de Napoléon III et la naissance d’une nouvelle pensée politique, celle de Karl Marx. Je viens de mettre en scène Le Joueur d’après Dostoïevski, et je pense aussi au chevalier Des Grieux de Manon Lescot, sorte d’anarchiste décadent. J’aime ces personnages, comme l’héroïne de La Dame aux camélias, qui choisissent ce qu’ils ne doivent pas choisir.
En suivrez-vous la trame romanesque ?
F. C. : Il y a une scène où Armand va au cimetière et demande à déterrer la Dame aux camélias. Il admire la beauté de ce corps en décomposition, de ces yeux mangés par la mort. Je veux mélanger cette scène avec L’Histoire de l’œil, de Bataille, car elle permet de montrer cette obsession de points contradictoires : Dieu et l’homme, la mort et la vie, comme le décor opposera un monde glamour et la réalité de favelas. Je ne compte donc pas suivre le déroulé linéaire de l’histoire mais m’intéresser à la transgression, à ces obsessions qui dépassent l’interdiction. C’est ce moment de dépassement anarchiste qui m’intéresse.
Le fait de travailler avec des comédiens français aura-t-il une influence sur le travail ?
F. C. : En Allemagne, on essaye de redécouvrir la grandeur théâtrale façon Comédie-Française. Alors je cherche mon exil à Paris ! J’aime casser les conventions, et les conventions reposent sur des souvenirs. Pendant les répétitions, j’essaye donc de raviver nos cœurs d’enfants. Dumas, comme Prévost, comme Bataille, sont français et montrent que l’intérêt de l’interdiction réside en ce qu’elle doit être dépassée, pour ensuite aller chercher l’absolution. Cette recherche de l’absolution est un moment catholique bien plus théâtral que dans le monde protestant. Et c’est aussi un Français, Artaud, qui me guide avec son théâtre de la peste où il parle de cette lumière qui vous amène à la mort. Si je travaille à partir de tout cela avec un peu de poudre de Brecht, ça peut devenir intéressant.
Ce ne sera donc pas une Dame aux camélias mélodramatique ?
F. C. : Dans la lignée de Brecht, il est hors de question de faire de la psychologie, mais bien plus de travailler sur les rapports entre les hommes. A l’époque de La Dame aux camélias, le monde industrialisé cause la perte de milliers de gens en se lançant dans la guerre de Crimée. Et quand on est dans une église, comme l’explique Bataille, au moment d’une cérémonie, on a envie de crier. C’est ce qui m’intéresse de montrer dans mon travail.
