Le roman fantastique de Mary Shelley Frankenstein ou le Prométhée moderne (1818) inspire à Fabrice Melquiot cette adaptation où l’auteure devient interprète de plusieurs personnages – elle-même et ceux qu’elle a créés -, et construit la trame narrative. La créature de Victor Frankenstein se matérialise par une marionnette de plus de deux mètres, organique et végétale, comme surgie du fond du lac Léman ! Sur ses rives débute l’histoire, une nuit de juin 1816, dans une villa où s’ennuient quatre poètes : John Polidori, Lord Byron, Percy Shelley et la jeune Mary, amoureuse du flamboyant Percy. C’est à celui qui inventera l’histoire la plus effrayante. A dix-neuf ans, Mary invente celle d’une créature sans nom, composée de morceaux de corps ramenés à la vie par un médecin fou, et qui, abandonnée par son créateur, sèmera la terreur. Fabrice Melquiot la nomme Beurk, monstre bien vivant et enfant du dégoût, et la vie du dialogue alimente la fable.
