Dix fois nommé aux Grammy Awards, unanimement admiré de tous ses confrères, ce pianiste au destin chahuté est aussi l’un des plus sous-estimés. Pour preuve sa quasi absence des festivals de l’été en France. Seul le Nice Jazz Festival – bravo à lui ! – a la bonne idée de l’accueillir le 16 juillet. Il sera entouré de son trio actuel, avec John Hebert (contrebasse) et Eric Mc Pherson (batterie), ce groupe de rêve qu’il faudra, à défaut de faire le voyage sur la Côte d’Azur, absolument écouter dans ses récents et sublimes albums « Live in Europe » et « Sunday Night at the Vanguard », parus chez Palmetto Records. Autre date à noter au-delà des frontières françaises, celle du 6 juillet au Gent Jazz Festival (en Belgique), où le pianiste new-yorkais jouera la musique de son tout nouvel opus : « Begin Again », dans lequel le WDR Big Band de Cologne revisite dans des arrangements du génial Vince Mendoza neuf compositions du pianiste, jalons de quarante ans de carrière. « Vince était très respectueux et conscient du fait que chacune de ces pièces a son propre monde » confie Hersch. « Avoir ces 17 musiciens à notre disposition pour créer chaque pièce était vraiment génial. C’était un plaisir pour moi de pouvoir ainsi amplifier le caractère unique de chaque composition. », explique le pianiste.
