Comment vous êtes-vous arrêté sur l’œuvre de Hanokh Levin ?
Frédéric Bélier-Garcia : J’ai lu tard les pièces de Hanokh Levin, disparu en 1989. J’ai aussitôt été séduit par son esthétique novatrice et insolite. Ses comédies mettent en relief l’humanité défaillante dans la manière de vivre des êtres. Le désir d’être soi chez chacun est considéré à la fois comme le moteur de l’allant existentiel et l’origine de toute tristesse. Nous sommes insatisfaits ou déçus dans notre envie expansionniste d’exister. Par le biais de la farce moderne, Levin a le don d’attraper ces riens qui font le sel et l’amertume de nos jours, la teneur de nos doutes.
Et pourquoi avoir choisi Yaacobi et Leidental précisément ?
F. B.-G. : C’est une pièce élémentaire de son œuvre avec trois personnages, une femme et deux hommes. L’auteur y dissèque le rapport amoureux en mettant à distance les caractéristiques du vaudeville car chacun s’interroge sur le fait de savoir s’il est vraiment amoureux. Mis à part l’efficacité comique, cette manière d’interroger les sentiments est plutôt belle ; elle est propre aux créateurs de comédies comme Lubitsch et son cinéma ou bien de Funès et son art du comédien. Ce n’est pas tant une langue qu’ils inventent qu’une posture de défense, une façon d’être au monde.

Comment s’incarne sur le plateau ce rapport à la vie ?
F. B. –G. : Le plaisir et la difficulté de monter Levin proviennent de ce que les acteurs sont à moitié dans de vraies scènes et à moitié dans un rapport de cabaret avec le public. À la trentaine de scènes, s’ajoutent douze chansons dont la musique originale est de Reinhardt Wagner. Sophie Perez assume la scénographie et les costumes. La mise en scène doit retrouver une désinvolture en éludant l’aspect franchouillard de l’écriture parfois crue et un certain folklore post-yiddish. Il existe dans cet entre-deux une subtilité.
De quoi traite la fable ?
F. B.-G. : À quarante ans, Yaacobi dit un beau matin avoir pris conscience de la nécessité d’« exister ». Il lui faut « écrabouiller » son meilleur ami Leidental avec lequel il mange tous les soirs du hareng sur son balcon. Il souhaite rencontrer une femme dodue… C’est une fable sur les mauvais sentiments à travers le besoin d’exister, comme éradiquer son ami pour prendre confiance en un destin heureux, s’assurer que son prochain est plus malheureux que soi. Des stratégies fumeuses où l’autre est utilisé pour contourner la solitude.
