Dans l’imaginaire de Jean-Claude Mourlevat, auteur jeunesse bien connu des enfants et adolescents, le héros du conte de Perrault est devenu Yann, le dernier d’une fratrie de sept enfants dans la France d’aujourd’hui, une France pauvre où les parents sont durs et l’assistante sociale en alerte. Comme dans Le Petit Poucet, les gamins de L’Enfant Océan s’arrachent du foyer familial après avoir surpris une conversation de leurs parents parlant de les tuer. Commence alors une sorte de road movie pour rejoindre l’Océan sous la conduite du plus petit qui, malgré ses dix ans et sa taille d’un enfant de deux ans, est pourvu d’une vive intelligence. Parce qu’elle est porteuse de théâtralité, Frédéric Sonntag s’empare de l’histoire avec brio, se jouant de l’abondance des lieux traversés et des personnages rencontrés par la folle équipée enfantine. Les cinq comédiens ne cessent de se transformer pour incarner la vingtaine de personnages de l’histoire. Enfin, Frédéric Sonntag a choisi d’incarner Yann par une marionnette manipulée à vue, de type Bunraku. Pour son premier spectacle jeune public, Frédéric Sonntag a réussi haut la main son passage dans la cour des petits !
