Aux débuts du cinéma (alors muet), l’accompagnement musical prenait souvent l’allure d’un pot-pourri romantique. Rapidement cependant, des musiques originales, spécialement écrites pour s’articuler aux images, virent le jour – telles celles que Charles Chaplin composa pour ses propres films. Depuis quelques années, des compositeurs apportent à leur tour leur réinterprétation musicale de chefs-d’œuvre cinématographiques. Martin Matalon (né en 1958) a ainsi donné en 1995 à Metropolis (1927) une nouvelle et remarquable « peau » sonore, que reprend l’Ensemble intercontemporain (le 18 mai), sous l’écran et la direction de Jean-Michaël Lavoie. Auparavant (le 15), le pianiste Jean-François Zygel et l’Orchestre national d’Ile-de-France dirigé par Jean Deroyer accompagnent La Femme dans la lune, toujours de Fritz Lang, avec la musique d’origine (1929) de Willy Schmidt-Gentner.
