En 2000, le chorégraphe australien Garry Stewart a créé une pièce inspirée du Lac des Cygnes de Petipa. Il poursuit sa recherche-déconstruction du ballet classique en s’attachant, cette fois, à l’archétype du ballet romantique : Giselle, l’histoire tragique de la jeune paysanne trompée et morte d’amour. Pour Garry Stewart, ce ballet offre plusieurs axes de recherche. Il y a d’abord la fameuse « scène de la folie », qui amène le chorégraphe à travailler sur l’hystérie, l’un des grands questionnements du monde de la médecine à l’époque de Giselle. Mais il explore aussi la gestuelle « éthérée » de Giselle : au second acte, Giselle rejoint le royaume fantôme des willis. Quelle est la danse d’une morte, la danse d’un fantôme sans poids ? Enfin, les onze danseurs se saisissent d’éléments de la chorégraphie originelle pour jouer sur le vocabulaire académique et explorer la force de ses lignes, de sa technique, tout en le détournant.
