En 1999, il devient Directeur de la Maîtrise des Hauts-de-Seine et propulse la formation au meilleur niveau en lui ouvrant les portes de l’Opéra National de Paris. Avec ses juvéniles troupes vocales rejointes par l’Ensemble Instrumental des Hauts-de-Seine, Gaël Darchen dirige aujourd’hui la Grande Messe en Ut Mineur de Mozart, partition de 1782-1783, marquant le sommet absolu (avec le Requiem) de son œuvre religieuse. Par un étrange hasard, la Grande Messe restera, elle aussi, inachevée. À chaque mesure, le génie est là, délivrant une musique surnaturelle, profondément habitée par la foi et l’amour, ou peut-être plus encore par la foi en l’amour… L’amour de la musique de Bach dans laquelle il plonge avec fascination à cette époque, et celui de sa femme Constance qu’il vient d’épouser, qu’il aime follement et à laquelle il offre la partie de première soprano. Car c’est d’abord en nous parlant d’amour que Mozart nous parle de Dieu… Avec les excellentes voix solistes de Marie Devellereau et Marie-Noëlle Cros (sopranos), Patrick Garayt (ténor) et Jean-Louis Serre (baryton-basse).
