Danse “Delhi” est le quatrième texte d’Ivan Viripaev que vous mettez en scène. Qu’est-ce qui vous inspire chez cet auteur ?
Galin Stoev : La première fois que j’ai lu un texte d’Ivan – Les rêves – j’ai tout de suite été touché. Je n’étais pas sûr de le comprendre, mais je sentais dans ce texte une très grande vitalité théâtrale. Cela étant, je n’avais aucune idée de la manière dont un tel texte pouvait être mis en scène. J’étais donc touché émotionnellement, mais aussi, très concrètement, dans mon métier de metteur en scène. Je trouvais là comme un défi. Au fil des années, l’écriture d’Ivan a mûri. Je continue à être interpellé par sa manière d’aborder les choses et le monde. Chacun de ses nouveaux textes arrive à me surprendre. Ivan est un auteur atypique : il est très émotionnel. En même temps, il fait preuve d’un sens de l’humour très grinçant. Ce mélange produit chez moi un véritable vertige.
Quels sont les aspects les plus emblématiques de son écriture ?
G. St. : Ivan Viripaev s’inspire de thèmes fondamentaux : la mort, la souffrance, la culpabilité. Ces thèmes sont aujourd’hui tellement banalisés, qu’on ne dispose plus de mots pour les exprimer avec justesse. Toutes ces choses sont devenues presque tabous. Ivan, lui, ne cherche pas de mots pour nommer tout cela : il préfère créer des situations où tous ces thèmes peuvent émerger. Il parle donc de la souffrance, de la mort et de la culpabilité à travers la théâtralité de son écriture, et non pas au travers de tel ou tel concept tout fait. Par ailleurs, son écriture, qui utilise un langage très courant, est toutefois rythmée comme un poème classique russe. Cette confrontation crée une sorte de musique qui déstabilise l’écoute et demande au spectateur de se réajuster constamment.

Qu’est-ce qui relie les sept parties de Danse “Delhi” ?
G. St. : Il ne s’agit pas de sept actes composant une seule et même pièce, mais de sept variations sur le même motif. Ces variations se déroulent toutes dans la salle d’attente d’un petit hôpital de quartier. Elles mettent en jeu les mêmes personnages avec, à tour de rôle, la mort de l’un d’entre eux. Ce qui est très impressionnant, c’est qu’au fur et à mesure de la représentation, on sent une progression : un parcours se met en place, avec même un certain suspens. Danse “Delhi“ donne à voir le conflit qui surgit entre différents possibles. Chaque variation est, en quelque sorte, un angle de vue, un angle d’attaque différent sur la réalité ou la vérité. Et peu à peu, on découvre que c’est l’alliance ou la superposition de ces différents angles qui fait sens, comme dans une forme de « cubisme dramatique »… On découvre que la réalité et la vérité sont multiples.
Sur quelles réflexions votre mise en scène s’est-t-elle fondée ?
G. St. : J’ai essayé de créer un objet qui propose au spectateur un dialogue immédiat, en essayant de mettre à nu les ressorts de la magie théâtrale. Ainsi, le dispositif scénographique est très épuré : une estrade blanche carrelée qui ne couvre pas la totalité du plateau. C’est un espace vide, comme une page blanche sur laquelle on peut commencer et chaque fois tout recommencer. Tout autour, apparaissent les bribes d’un monde hospitalier. Les comédiens avancent dans l’action à travers des mouvements émotionnels très forts. C’est à partir de ces ruptures psychologiques qu’ils trouvent leur rythme, leur légèreté. On peut alors atteindre une impression de réalisme, mais avec un petit décalage. Ce décalage amène le public à écouter différemment. Un peu comme à l’Opéra, où l’on peut entendre les tréfonds de la psychologie des personnages de manière non réaliste, par le biais d’artifices rythmiques et mélodiques.
