Ils sont sept, travestis ou transsexuels tannés par les années, qui tous dérogent aux canons habituels. L’un est infirmier pédiatre, un autre employé de bureau à Bruxelles, un troisième coiffeur, tapissier et peintre… Ils ont entre 55 et 65 ans. Il y a aussi une femme et un jeune garçon russe. Le soir, certains se produisaient en amateurs ou semi-pro dans des boites de nuit. D’autres font leurs premiers pas sur le plateau. Tous bien mis dans leurs complets gris solennels, ils vont se métamorphoser et revêtir leurs costumes de scène, donner leur dernière représentation au Gardenia. Dans ce cabaret ringard, usé à force de recycler les artifices d’un bonheur pailleté, ils s’effeuillent joyeusement et deviennent femmes, puis se transforment en vedettes, en icônes, jouant à être Liza Minnelli ou Marlène Dietrich, le temps d’un Boléro de Ravel.
Zones troubles de la masculinité et de la féminité
C’est l’actrice Vanessa Van Durme, transsexuelle pionnière, qui a porté l’utopie de ce projet hors normes, inspiré du film documentaire Yo soy asi (Je suis comme ça) de Sonia Herman Dolz sur la fermeture d’un cabaret pour travestis de Barcelone. Dans cette pièce douce-amère, se choquent tous les clichés : les strass, robes de princesses, perruques et maquillages outrés, la vie d’artiste et la misère du marginal travelo… Alain Platel, qui signe la mise en scène avec son complice Frank Van Laecke, sait montrer la vie dans son humanité gouailleuse, truculente, à la fois dérisoire et sublime, fragile et increvable, sans tabou mais avec pudeur. Ces êtres livrent des éclats quotidiens, souvenirs d’antan, histoires d’amour, liens familiaux… se perdent souvent dans l’anecdote mais suscitent l’empathie. Balançant entre savoir-faire de professionnels et maladresse d’amateurs, ils dénudent un peu les cahots de leurs parcours, laissant fuser des bouffées délirantes par delà le rire et l’angoisse, comme un baroud d’honneur, dernière salve avant la soupe-télé-charentaise. « On continue à espérer quand on est vieux et on espère de mieux en mieux, de plus en plus fort. » dit Vanessa Van Durme. Ceux-là nous le montrent généreusement.
