Depuis 1972, le Festival d’Automne accueille à bras ouverts la compagnie Merce Cunningham, du plus petit “event“ à la grande forme plastique, musicale et chorégraphique, en passant par la création pour les vingt-six danseurs du ballet de l’Opéra de Paris. Au mois d’avril dernier, Merce Cunningham créait à Brooklyn Nearly Ninety (presque quatre-vingt-dix, en référence à son âge), un spectacle, une fois encore, tourné vers le futur. Il y lâchait ses treize danseurs dans une scénographie de métal signée de l’architecte italienne Benedetta Tagliabue, sous l’emprise musicale des trois créateurs de génie John Paul Jones, Takehisa Kosugi et Sonic Youth. Reprise au Théâtre de la Ville, Nearly Ninety ouvre ensuite la voie à d’autres points de vue portés par des artistes qui font vivre d’une façon ou d’une autre l’héritage Cunningham. Le travail de Tacita Dean montre le chorégraphe au travail et reprend ses principes fondateurs, notamment vis-à-vis de l’espace.
Une œuvre dont chacun s’empare
Cette vidéaste a bâti son installation au 104 autour de Stillness, pièce interprétée par Cunningham lui-même sur la composition 4’33’’ (de silence) de John Cage. Six films composent la performance, dont la spatialisation permet une appréhension singulière de l’espace-temps de l’œuvre originale. La création de Boris Charmatz, 50 ans de danse, a elle aussi des allures de reprise. Pourtant, le directeur du Musée de la Danse ne joue pas la carte historique, fidèle à sa propre ligne de conduite qui le fait sans cesse sortir des cadres. Ici, un ouvrage photographique de référence autour du maître signé David Vaughan, fait office de boîte à outils dans laquelle le chorégraphe pioche allégrement. Grande citation, pauses animées, danse en kit, l’angle revendiqué par Charmatz permet à chaque interprète de réinventer sa propre histoire. Pièce créée aussi bien pour des étudiants que des professionnels, elle convie ici des interprètes issus eux-mêmes de la Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
