Comment avez-vous "découvert" cette partition ?
Geoffroy Jourdain : La version avec accompagnement d’orgue, bien qu’étant postérieure à la version avec orchestre – elle a été réalisée par Schumann sous un pseudonyme, pour un concours organisé par une société de concerts anglaise – n’est pas une oeuvre inconnue des choeurs germaniques. La version avec orchestre, récemment rééditée par Schott, ne semble pas quant à elle avoir reçu l’attention qu’elle mérite. C’est l’émouvante ténacité de Clara Schumann à faire éditer l’oeuvre après la mort de son mari qui a attiré mon attention sur cet ouvrage. Schott avait refusé de l’éditer du vivant du compositeur. Elle fit en sorte de convaincre le monde musical de l’intérêt de cette messe – dont Brahms, qui ne voyait pas dans cette oeuvre posthume une priorité – en insérant des mouvements à des programmes de concert. Aujourd’hui encore, même si l’intérêt de la musique de Schumann n’est absolument pas à prouver, la réhabilitation de cette oeuvre a été un parcours du combattant…

En quoi cette musique vous paraît-elle digne d’intérêt ?
Geoffroy Jourdain : Lorsque les Cris de Paris ont entrepris, il y a cinq ans, d’interpréter la version choeur et orgue en concert, c’était déjà en vue de réaliser un jour la version avec orchestre, qui me semblait encore plus intéressante, et de sensibiliser le public à la qualité si singulière de cette oeuvre. Une collaboration avec l’Orchestre d’Auvergne, rendue possible par le festival de la Chaise-Dieu, a beaucoup joué dans cette entreprise. A l’époque où Schumann écrit cette messe en quelques semaines, entre février et mars 1852, il confie à ses proches combien l’inspiration sacrée est au coeur de ses préoccupations du moment : « Concentrer son énergie sur la musique sacrée, voilà sans doute le but suprême de l’artiste ». C’est une facette méconnue du compositeur que cette aspiration à revisiter les ouvrages de Palestrina, Bach ou Mozart, à considérer le Psaume 42 de Mendelssohn comme la plus grande oeuvre religieuse de tous les temps. Pour moi, la Missa Sacra est en quelque sorte la soeur jumelle de la messe en ut de Beethoven. Ecrite pour des effectifs à peu près semblables à ceux des messes de Haydn, elle constitue un vibrant hommage à une grande tradition contrapuntique qui commence à la Renaissance et dont Schumann se fait l’héritier. Les références à Bach sont manifestes, tout au long de l’oeuvre, et sans le génie et la distance du compositeur, frôleraient presque la citation dans l’Agnus Dei final.
Comment expliquez-vous que cette œuvre ait disparu ainsi des programmes de concerts et des studios d’enregistrements ?
Geoffroy Jourdain : L’apparente simplicité des moyens requis par cette oeuvre (un choeur à 4 voix, une mezzo soprano solo, un orchestre "Mozart") donnent l’impression d’un ouvrage modeste. Je pense que c’est l’une des raisons qui ont fait que l’on a négligé de l’approfondir. Et d’une façon générale, l’écriture chorale de Schumann est trop peu interprétée. Si l’on connaît le Requiem pour Mignon, que l’on cite les choeurs majestueux du troisième mouvement des Scènes de Faust, ou que l’on commence seulement à considérer à sa juste valeur le Paradis et la Peri, rares sont les concerts ou l’on programme les Romanzen und Balladen a cappella, le Pèlerinage de la Rose, ou encore les somptueux lieder pour double choeur opus 141 que nous interpréterons en complément de la Missa Sacra. Dans mon panthéon personnel des incontournables du répertoire choral a cappella, ils figurent sans aucun doute dans le peloton de tête.
