On peut dans un premier temps être surpris de voir, dans un même programme, des œuvres aussi différentes que celles de George Balanchine (1904-1983), figure de la danse académique, Trisha Brown (née en 1936), représentante majeure de la post-modern dance américaine, et Pina Bausch (1940-2009), incarnation du Tanztheater allemand. Or cette réunion est l’occasion de découvrir autrement des travaux que l’on croyait bien connaître : mise en relation avec des esthétiques différentes, chaque pièce révèle des dimensions insoupçonnées.
Rejouer les frontières de l’académique et du contemporain
Le magnifique Sacre du printemps de Pina Bausch semble ainsi répondre à Apollon de Balanchine, qui se déploie lui aussi sur la musique de Stravinsky – et dont la modernité est frappante. Quant à Trisha Brown, on réalise qu’elle n’est pas insensible à la séduction de l’académisme. Dans O złożony / O composite, qu’elle a chorégraphié en 2004 pour le Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris, elle se plaît à faire jouer ses modes de composition sur le vocabulaire classique. Et son goût pour les qualités aériennes fait étonnamment écho à la chorégraphie de Balanchine : ce n’est pas le moindre des charmes de ces soirées composées que de faire ainsi surgir, entre des styles et des démarches a priori contradictoires, de subtils dialogues.
