En rencontrant le dramaturge Martin Crimp, George Benjamin est devenu compositeur d’opéra. C’était en 2006, avec Into the Little Hill. Après Written on Skin (2012) et avant Picture a day like this (l’été dernier au Festival d’Aix, une magnifique réussite*), Lessons in Love and Violence confirme à quel point ce compositeur, qui s’est d’abord bâti un langage orchestral très personnel, sait créer des personnages lyriques. Lessons in Love and Violence est un huis-clos étouffant, récit d’une machination au sein même de la maison royale où chaque mot, chaque regard est porté par la musique, qui jaillit même en cataractes lors de magnifiques interludes. À la tête de l’Orchestre de Paris, George Benjamin retrouve Stéphane Degout (le roi), Gyula Orendt (Gaveston, son amant), Georgia Jarman (la reine Isabel).
