Bien sûr, cet as de la six-cordes grava de beaux sommets, dont le tubesque « This Masquerade » en 1976. Bien entendu, son terrible « Give me The Night » fait danser toute la planète. Maintes fois samplé et repris, cet hymne du jazz funk tendance testostérone discoïde parut en 1980 sur l’album du même nom. Ce fut le peak dans la carrière du natif de Pittsburgh, grandi dans le sillon de Wes Montgomery, le modèle revendiqué de celui que l’on affubla du titre de « New Boss Guitar » à ses débuts discographiques. Biberonné de Charlie Christian et émancipé aux sons du rhythm’n’blues, le virtuose à l’affolante main gauche qui peut se montrer redoutable scatteur à ses heures n’a jamais caché son envie de séduire les foules. Pour le meilleur, parfois ; pour le pire, aussi, souvent. Pour autant, au vu de ses états de service, il n’est guère surprenant de retrouver George Benson dans le temple du jazz manouche, une école stylistique pour tout féru d’improvisations. Pourvu que ça swingue !
