George Kaplan… Ce nom aussitôt s’embrume dans une aura de mystère, prend multiples figures et glisse d’une identité à l’autre. Car le personnage mythique de La Mort aux trousses, chef-d’œuvre d’Hitchcock, justement recouvre un leurre, une fiction inventée par les services secrets qui, au gré d’un mauvais hasard, finit par prendre vie. Fasciné par la confusion entre réel et virtuel qu’opèrent discrètement nos sociétés ultra-médiatisées, l’auteur et metteur en scène Frédéric Sonntag s’empare du sujet et compose une comédie noire sur les enjeux politiques de la fiction, « c’est-à-dire tout aussi bien les grands récits hollywoodiens, le storytelling politique, les campagnes publicitaires, ou les histoires bêtifiantes du divertissement spectaculaire. ». Avec une redoutable habilité, il tresse trois récits, reliant un groupe activiste clandestin en pleine dissolution, une équipe de scénaristes en quête de concept pour une série télé et le gouvernement invisible d’une grande puissance menacée par un danger sans visage. Autant d’histoires qui s’enchevêtrent dans une spirale sans fin, où « George Kaplan » devient l’avatar d’un chaos universel et des peurs collectives.
