Qu’est-ce qui vous a intéressé dans ce texte?
Gérard Gelas : La possibilité à partir d’un univers latino de développer un théâtre où les barrières entre les mondes visibles et invisibles sont gommées. Pour moi le théâtre joue avec la réalité au moins autant qu’il la reflète. L’onirisme, qui est un des points d’appui importants dans l’écriture de Feinmann – puisque principalement sont mis en présence une figure disparue, Che Guevara, et un enquêteur évoluant aujourd’hui -, permet non pas de refaire l’histoire mais plutôt de la comprendre autrement. Enfin, la qualité littéraire de l’auteur très connu en Amérique latine et injustement méconnu en Europe.

Qui sont les comédiens qui interprètent le Che et le journaliste ?
G. G. : Pour incarner le Che, Olivier Sitruk est apparu comme une évidence, de par à la fois son jeu de comédien et sa silhouette, fine, racée, brune avec un mélange de fragilité et de détermination dans le regard et l’attitude. Pour le personnage du journaliste enquêteur, je cherchais une opposition parfaite de silhouette et de voix. Jacques Frantz, avec lequel depuis quelques années nous nous étions promis de travailler ensemble, est arrivé sur ce projet par le plus grand bonheur. A cause de sa force brute de roc, sa voix de basse célèbre et appréciée, et surtout sa manière de donner corps aux personnages qu’il interprète. La qualité de ces acteurs m’a permis de travailler sur une confrontation où l’implacable des mots est porté au plus haut par l’interprétation.
D’autres personnages apparaissent. Comment sont-ils intégrés à la dramaturgie ?
G. G. : La dimension onirique de l’œuvre de Feinmann encourage le passage, à travers le même comédien, d’un personnage à l’autre. Jacques Frantz glisse ainsi du personnage du journaliste à celui de Fidel Castro par exemple. Cela se fait à vue avec une utilisation minimaliste d’accessoires. Il en va de même pour les très beaux comédiens Guillaume Lanson, interprétant Antonio, guérillero fidèle au Che, ou capitaine de la milice de Batista, et Laure Vallès, tour à tour paysanne bolivienne ou Aleida, la femme du Che. Le jeune et talentueux François Santucci sera quant à lui militaire bolivien ou compagnon du Che.
Le texte est-il d’abord et surtout une réflexion historique sur une icône, ou est-il la remise en question de cette icône, à travers une analyse de son parcours et de ses opinions ?
G. G. : Ni l’un ni l’autre. Ce texte m’apparaît comme une sorte d’enquête sur quelque chose qui a eu lieu autrefois, enfoui aujourd’hui et déjà oublié par beaucoup : la révolution par les armes. A l’heure où dans nos sociétés la violence s’exprime en mettant le feu à un bus ou en frappant femme ou enfant, la question de la violence révolutionnaire pourrait se poser et retrouver sa place parmi les souffrances que l’humanité s’inflige. Le questionnement de toute violence, révolutionnaire ou non, me semble essentiel.
Comment le texte traite-t-il cette question de la violence, qui fait débat entre les deux protagonistes ?
G. G. : Il l’aborde d’un point de vue politique et idéologique, mais aussi personnel et privé, explorant la condition de l’être humain. Au fil de cette dialectique puissante, c’est à se demander qui du Che ou du journaliste renferme en lui la véritable violence. Est-ce celui qui pose les questions ou celui qui est interrogé ? La violence est le sujet même de l’interrogation de quelqu’un qui vit aujourd’hui adressé à quelqu’un qui vivait hier, et le texte ne peut trancher vraiment. Il interroge. C’est aussi une des fonctions vitales du théâtre.
