Moins théâtral que Lully, moins audacieux que Rameau, Charpentier n’en est pas moins un compositeur exceptionnel. Longtemps associé au seul Te Deum, le compositeur a su montrer toute sa puissance d’invention grâce au talent des ensembles baroques. Au premier rang desquels Il Seminario Musicale de Gérard Lesne. Le disque « Tristes déserts » (Zig-Zag Territoires) a récemment rappelé l’osmose de cette formation avec la rhétorique vivante et raffinée de Charpentier. La voix du haute-contre, soucieuse de diction et de phrasé, n’est pas pour rien dans cette alchimie. A la Cité de la musique, l’ensemble interprète deux grands oratorios : Mors Saülis et Jonathae et Sacrificium Abrahae, écrits tous deux autour de 1680. Charpentier illustre les récits bibliques avec une palette de couleurs qui force l’admiration.
