Dans les interstices et les non-dits de la tragédie shakespearienne, Howard Barker explore le creuset passionnel d’où surgit la folie d’Hamlet en donnant chair et voix à la subversive et lascive Gertrude, sa mère, monstre fabuleux tout entière dévouée à sa propre jouissance. Grâce à Barker, on comprend que la tragédie d’Hamlet est de ne pouvoir être Œdipe puisque sa mère est par essence amante, qu’elle a tué le père d’Hamlet en jouissant sur son cadavre, qu’elle affame sa fille en offrant à Claudius le lait d’un sein qui se refuse à devenir mamelle, qu’elle arbore, la quarantaine flamboyante, les tenues et les désirs d’une jeune femme et qu’elle s’agenouille au cimetière non pas devant la fosse de son mari mais devant le sexe dressé du meurtrier de celui-ci… « Gertrude – Le Cri est une pièce qui choque, reconnaît le metteur en scène Günther Leschnik, mais au-delà de la provocation, visant à déstabiliser les habitudes du spectateur, il s’agit de trouver le bon questionnement des actes et des corps. » La nudité sensuelle et arrogante de Gertrude, magnifiée par Sophie Million, comédienne dont l’audace n’a d’égale que la maîtrise de ses effets, est traitée comme dans un rêve, dans un décor que sculpte et modèle la lumière, entre la braise de l’orgasme et la glace de la mort.
