En mystagogue plutôt qu’en analyste, en poète plutôt qu’en clinicien, Howard Barker explore le creuset passionnel d’où surgit la folie d’Hamlet en donnant chair et voix à la scandaleuse Gertrude, monstre fabuleux tout entière dévouée à sa propre jouissance. Grâce à Barker, on comprend que la tragédie d’Hamlet est de ne pouvoir être Œdipe puisque sa mère est par essence amante, qu’elle a tué le père d’Hamlet en jouissant sur son cadavre, qu’elle affame sa fille en offrant à Claudius le lait d’un sein qui se refuse à devenir mamelle, qu’elle arbore à quarante-deux ans les tenues et les désirs d’une jeune femme et qu’elle s’agenouille au cimetière non pas devant la fosse de son mari mais devant le sexe dressé de son meurtrier… Interprétée avec une fureur qui sait admirablement retenir ses effets par une Anne Alvaro exceptionnelle de grâce impudique et de morgue amorale, Gertrude est la figure maîtresse de cette implacable partie d’échecs où tout se renverse jusqu’au décor et dont toutes les pièces se déplacent en fonction et autour de la reine, mante dévorante dont le cri orgasmique désagrège le cosmos comme seuls le peuvent le plaisir et la mort. Gertrude est comme la pulsion dionysiaque face à l’ordre apollinien : une insulte plus encore qu’une contradiction, sa menace plus que son envers.
Du théâtre à la perfection
Le texte de Barker, magnifiquement traduit en français par Elisabeth Angel-Perez et Jean-Michel Déprats, est extrêmement dense. Poétique, sensuel, obscène, jouant des répétitions et des ruptures, des niveaux de langue et de sens, il constitue un matériau dont les comédiens s’emparent avec une aisance et une souplesse peu communes, permettant ainsi son écoute au-delà des seules étapes de l’intrigue. La mise en scène de Giorgio Barberio Corsetti réussit le tour de force de se mettre à son service tout en installant une autonomie dramatique qui le sublime sans l’écraser. Il faut saluer à cet égard le remarquable équilibre que le metteur en scène réussit à instaurer entre l’inventivité et l’originalité des propositions qu’il fait surgir au plateau et l’absolu respect avec lequel il traite le texte que la scénographie et le décor transcendent en en illustrant la signification et en en clarifiant les ressorts. Servi par une troupe impeccable de talent et de maîtrise, ce spectacle est un véritable chef-d’œuvre qui offre la rareté de la complémentarité parfaite entre tous les éléments que convoque le théâtre.
