On ne découvre pas la fascination que la personne et la musique de Gil Evans exerce sur le pianiste, chef d’orchestre, compositeur et pédagogue Laurent Cugny. Cet ex-directeur musical de l’Orchestre National de Jazz (au milieu des années 90) a collaboré à maintes reprises avec Gil Evans et lui a consacré une biographie qui fait référence. Il se lance aujourd’hui dans une nouvelle aventure mobilisant de très jeunes musiciens en grande formation. Pour Cugny, il n’est pas question d’un hommage figé au grand maître mais de faire revivre « l’esprit de Gil Evans plutôt que la lettre de sa musique, impossible à recréer. S’appuyer donc sur ses arrangements (des années 60 et 70 plus que 50), les utiliser comme base pour faire vivre un orchestre d’aujourd’hui. Mais aussi proposer des arrangements inédits sur des compositions inédites. D’où le terme d’atelier : atelier d’orchestre, atelier d’écriture. Dans ce but, j’ai choisi de m’entourer de cette magnifique génération de musiciens nés autour des années 1980, qui entendent et font le jazz d’aujourd’hui « . Le retour à la scène du celui qui se consacre depuis quelque temps à l’enseignement de la musicologie à La Sorbonne.
