La pièce de Gorki met à nu le milieu rude des marchands qui ont réussi à s’extraire de la misère et redoutent d’y retourner.
Gilberte Tsaï : Ce sont des êtres qui sont partis de rien et qui ont réussi à force de travail, comme la figure de Lopakhine, celui qui rachète les terres et abat les arbres dans La Cerisaie de Tchekhov. Ce monde tchekhovien est plus rêveur que celui de Gorki, âpre et violent dans les relations humaines à l’intérieur de la propriété et de l’entreprise privée. Et Vassa est une femme, un fait rare dans la littérature russe de l’époque qui réduit souvent la gent féminine à une sous-humanité.
Pourquoi ce titre Vassa 1910 ?
G. T. : La pièce a été écrite en 1910 dans une première version alors que Gorki était en exil à Sorrente ; elle n’a jamais été jouée de son vivant. La version de 1936 date de quelques mois avant sa mort, et relève davantage d’une obédience stalinienne. Le parcours du jeune et libre Gorki va jusqu’à finir ses jours auprès du pouvoir soviétique et de Staline. J’aurais bien voulu monter les deux pièces en une soirée pour qu’on puisse apprécier les différences, un souhait impossible dans la pratique.
Qui est Vassa ?
G. T. : Vassa est l’épouse d’un moujik qui a réussi, propriétaire d’une faïencerie. Il est mourant depuis quelques mois, c’est donc elle qui a pris en charge l’entreprise, et elle met tout en œuvre pour que le bien lui revienne. Elle a deux fils qui n’ont qu’une idée en tête, vendre l’affaire et se partager l’argent. Un beau-frère s’est engagé financièrement dans la fabrique et aimerait récupérer sa mise. L’enjeu pour Vassa est de garder l’entreprise.
Cette situation rappelle des aspects autobiographiques de Gorki.
G. T. : Enfance révèle que Gorki a été élevé par ses grands-parents. Le grand-père, propriétaire d’une entreprise de teinturerie, a deux fils violents qui exigent leur héritage. Le grand-père cède et partage ses biens. Les fils incapables et ivrognes fondent une entreprise qui fait faillite. Les grands-parents sont réduits à l’état de mendicité et de misère : le jeune Gorki va devoir gagner sa vie à dix ans. L’auteur de théâtre qu’il est devenu reprend la situation familiale en faisant « gagner » Vassa. C’est une histoire de filiation et de transmission par les femmes. Vassa refuse de se sacrifier et met de côté son rôle de mère ; elle constitue sa propre famille, écartant ses deux fils et rappelant sa belle-fille avec ses enfants. Chez Gorki, nul jugement moral, nulle condamnation : les personnages existent dans l’instant, luttant contre un présent violent qu’ils surmontent instinctivement. Une belle force féminine.
