Quels sont les caractéristiques de cette pièce ?
Gilles Bouillon : C’est une comédie autour du thème de l’amour et de la mort dont la charge comique est exceptionnelle. C’est surtout une pièce très difficile à traduire en français et Jean-Michel Déprats fait un travail formidable sur la langue pour transcrire cet esprit excessivement anglais qui la caractérise avec cette espèce d’acidité dans les relations, ces combats de mots dont seuls les anglais ont le secret. Le tout avec un sens de l’humour incroyable.
Quelle en est l’intrigue ?
G. B. : Quatre jeunes gens décident de s’enfermer dans une espèce de thébaïde pour rêver, lire, écrire, jeûner et demeurer à l’abri des femmes. Tel est leur projet et ce projet est impossible ! Un seul des quatre résiste mais finit par jurer aussi qu’il fera abstraction des questions vitales. Et évidemment, dès la deuxième scène, arrivent quatre femmes et, évidemment aussi, l’attraction physique et émotionnelle est intense ! Les jeunes gens sont donc d’emblée parjures, ce qui est très grave. Ils envoient des sonnets aux filles, se surprennent les uns les autres en train de les écrire en cachette et constate que ce genre de pari totalement fou qu’on peut faire à seize ans est impossible : on ne peut pas infléchir la nature à ce point ! Et puis l’automne arrive d’un coup, à l’annonce de la mort du père de la princesse. Les jeunes filles, obligées de partir, promettent alors de revenir un an et un jour plus tard, pour voir si les jeunes gens seront parjures une deuxième fois…

C’est une pièce de troupe avec de très nombreux rôles…
G. B. : En effet, il n’y a pas de rôle principal et un bel équilibre au niveau de la parole. Quatre jeunes gens, quatre jeunes filles, quatre clowns. Mais aussi des rustiques, du travestissement, comme souvent chez Shakespeare où la quête de l’identité se fait toujours par l’altérité, des thèmes qu’on retrouve dans Le Songe d’une nuit d’été ou dans Comme il vous plaira et surtout une belle énergie des commencements, comme celle d’un premier amour…

G. B. : Je voulais réunir un groupe de comédiens important. L’envie de cela et le désir de Shakespeare se sont imposés ensemble. Parmi les treize comédiens, jouent ceux de la troisième génération formée dans le cadre du Jeune Théâtre en Région Centre et certains de la première promotion que je réengage comme intermittents. Je les ai laissé respirer : une année de transition, c’est bien ! Ils reviennent encore plus forts et en se rendant d’autant mieux compte de la chance que représente le fait de participer à la vie d’un théâtre et d’y jouer beaucoup. C’est le plateau et la présence du public qui révèlent le comédien. Etre comédien c’est jouer tous les soirs, même les soirs où on n’en a pas envie. C’est aussi un métier ! C’est un art mais c’est aussi un artisanat.
