Comment avez-vous jeté votre dévolu sur ce roman de Guérin ?
Gilles Chabrier : C’est grâce à un ami metteur en scène me faisant cadeau du livre La tête vide que j’ai rencontré l’œuvre de Raymond Guérin. Le roman est singulier ; on ne peut faire d’emblée la lumière sur l’énigme tissée, une affaire provinciale de meurtre et d’adultère, de crime ou de suicide. Un matin, au lieu-dit « La Tourbière », on découvre les corps morts, nus et enlacés de Suzanne Barcenas et Gustave Tonnelier. Personne ne se doutait des relations intimes qu’entretenaient ces deux-là. L’épouse qu’on croyait insoupçonnable cache des secrets tandis que l’époux n’est pas celui que l’on pensait. Comment peut-on méconnaître autant ses voisins ? À mesure que l’on croit avancer dans l’élucidation de l’énigme, on recule et se perd dans l’obscurcissement progressif des interprétations. Un vrai miroitement.

La situation dramaturgique propose une mise en abyme de l’enquête policière elle-même.
G. Ch. : Le spectateur de théâtre, comme le lecteur initial du roman, est invité personnellement à dénouer les fils de l’intrigue. Je me suis inspiré pour la situation scénique, de la troisième et dernière partie du roman, intitulée le Journal de Raymond Pellegrin. Sur le plateau, Raymond Pellegrin – écrivain, critique d’art, archéologue et propriétaire de « La Tourbière » – convie un soir ses amis chez lui, le rédacteur en chef de « L’Éveil républicain », son épouse et une médecin légiste. À ces trois invités s’ajoutent les spectateurs que contrôle le maître de cérémonie occupé à la recherche des mobiles des uns et des autres. Le public est convié à s’asseoir autour de la scène tandis que l’espace de jeu fait scintiller une mosaïque d’images vidéo, un kaléidoscope de points de vue contradictoires.
Quelle est la technique utilisée pour ce compte-rendu d’énigme ?
G. Ch. : Le romancier n’hésite pas, à côté des témoignages des proches, à accumuler les données – dépositions, procès-verbaux, comptes-rendus médicaux. Un travail de fourmi à la fois lumineux et laborieux. Au gré des témoignages, l’hôte Raymond Pellegrin va devoir déplacer son point de vue et sa version de l’histoire. La vérité est insaisissable car elle n’est perçue que de façon parcellaire, selon l’angle d’attaque adopté. La représentation est une mise en question permanente du réel, du regard, d’une certaine forme de vérité et de la multiplicité des convictions. Les spectateurs se déguisent en archéologues des passions humaines. Cette affaire de meurtre se construit sous nos yeux dans un jeu de rôles auquel chacun participe, tandis que l’auteur n’hésite pas à dire des choses crues et dures au nom de la vérité …
