Si ses différentes ouvertures sont souvent à l’affiche des concerts symphoniques, l’unique opéra de Beethoven est rarement monté sur les scènes d’opéra. Pour cette raison, on se contentera volontiers de cette version de concert dirigée par Giovanni Antonini. Le chef milanais est bien connu en France pour avoir été l’un des fondateurs en 1989 de l’ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, mais on connait peut-être moins sa collaboration avec l’Orchestre de Chambre de Bâle (Kammerorchester Basel), dont il est le Principal chef invité depuis quelques années. Il s’est pourtant engagé avec ses musiciens suisses dans deux ambitieuses réalisations discographiques, toujours en cours : une intégrale des Symphonies de Beethoven, et sous le titre « Haydn 2032 », une intégrale des cent sept symphonies de Joseph Haydn qui doit s’achever en 2032 lors de la célébration des trois cents ans de la naissance du compositeur. Pour l’heure, il narre en musique l’histoire de Fidelio – hymne au courage et à l’amour conjugal, et bien sûr à la liberté, qui fut d’abord intitulé Leonore en 1804 puis remanié et rebaptisé dix ans plus tard. Avec Adrianne Pieczonka (Leonore), Michael Spyres (Florestan) dans les rôles principaux des époux.
