Vous aviez 10 ans en 1980… Que saviez-vous de Bill Evans au moment de sa mort?
Giovanni Mirabassi : Je l’écoutais déjà… Surtout le premier trio, et son disque « with strings ». Je l’avais découvert grâce à une publication qui existait à l’époque en Italie, l’Enciclopedia del Jazz, vendue en kiosque au rythme d’un fascicule par semaine, assorti d’une audio-cassette contenant un morceau par artiste. Par ce biais, j’ai eu deux révélations majeures en un laps de temps très rapproché : Bill Evans et Oscar Peterson. A partir de là, j’ai commencé à acheter tous les disques de ces deux artistes. La musique de Bill Evans a accompagné toute ma vie.
En quoi sa musique vous paraît-elle importante? Qu’a-t-elle apportée à l’Histoire du jazz ?
G. M. : La musique de Bill Evans est caractérisée par plusieurs éléments d’envergure. Tout d’abord un discours harmonique extrêmement développé, et très personnel, basé sur les "voicings" (conduite des voix), qui repousse loin les frontières du genre. Sur le plan de la musique d’ensemble, le pianiste introduit le concept d’"Interplay", que l’on peut traduire par "jeu interactif", qui consiste à élever tous les musiciens du trio au rang de solistes d’égale importance, et à développer une musique résolument horizontale, un peu à l’image du jeu très polyphonique du pianiste. Par son jeu, Evans a tout simplement changé le cours de l’histoire, en ajoutant au vocabulaire du jazz bien des mots qui sont aujourd’hui intégrés dans le langage courant de cette musique. Et il faut finir par le point essentiel, à savoir la portée émotive de son oeuvre, son côté intemporel.
Plus précisément, quel rôle a joué Evans dans votre histoire musicale personnelle ?
G. M. : Celui d’une source intarissable d’inspiration, l’exemple ultime, musicalement mais aussi en tant que leader. C’est un artiste d’une grande cohérence et intégrité, qui n’a jamais arrêté de chercher à parfaire son art. Je ne saurais vous dire combien de milliers de fois j’ai pu écouter certains de ses disques. Plus qu’un exercice de style ou un cours d’histoire du jazz, lui rendre hommage consiste avant tout pour moi à présenter des morceaux de son répertoire qui m’ont touché au fil des ans, avec lesquels j’ai bâti une relation personnelle.
Que représente pour vous sur le plan émotionnel le fait de jouer avec Eliot Zigmund’
G. M. : Eliot me fait un grand honneur en venant à Paris pour ces concerts, et il est certain que ça me fait quelque chose de jouer avec lui. Il a en particulier enregistré l’album « You must believe in spring », qui est sans doute celui de Bill que j’ai le plus écouté, et peut être l’album que j’ai écouté le plus dans l’absolu. Eliot a participé à cette séance et gravé avec Bill Evans et Eddie Gomez l’un des chefs-d’oeuvre du jazz. Je ne sais pas très bien ce qu’on va faire avec ce groupe ! Pour l’instant je n’ai pas d’autres objectifs que de faire de la belle musique… Nous n’avons jamais joué ensemble et je suis très curieux du résultat.
