C’est un grand bonheur de retrouver autour de votre piano ce trio incroyable…
Giovanni Mirabassi : J’ai voulu faire ce disque (et d’autres suivront) pour sceller notre collaboration, et pérenniser cette belle aventure. J’avais formé ce trio autour de mon précédent album : "Terra Furiosa". Nous avons eu la chance de « tourner » beaucoup et aucun de nous trois n’avait envie que cela s’arrête ! Personnellement, je ne me suis jamais senti aussi libre au sein d’un groupe. Mes acolytes me donnent des ailes : tout devient simple, l’entente et les échanges sont immédiats et parfaitement naturels… Le bonheur quoi ! Rapporté à mon échelle bien sûr, je crois que Jarrett a dû vivre quelque chose de semblable avec Jack Dejohnette et Gary Peacock… J’aime chez Leon Parker et chez Gianluca Renzi les mêmes choses, bien que ce soient des musiciens très différents : le swing, la précision, le sens mélodique, la créativité, mais surtout la grande générosité sur scène. Et puis il y a entre nous quelque chose d’extraordinaire, de magique. Je ne trouve pas d’autre mot.

Vous exprimez avec votre piano un sens du “chant” que l’on pourrait être tenté de rattacher à vos racines italiennes. Qu’en pensez-vous’
G.M. : Il y a sans doute du vrai. Je pense que l’Italian Sound tourne autour du sens mélodique des musiciens italiens, puisque du point de vue du style nous sommes assez différents. J’ai été élevé dans un environnement d’opéra et de chansons d’amour, comme tous les italiens. Je suis sûr que cela a déteint quelque part ! J’ai aussi suivi mes "maîtres" : Enrico Pieranunzi d’un coté, Aldo Ciccolini de l’autre. Et puis j’ai toujours été fasciné par les belles mélodies, leur pouvoir évocateur, leur universalité. Je suis aussi très sensible aux mots, d’où ma passion pour la chanson.
