Voir Giselle aujourd’hui, c’est d’abord plonger aux sources de notre imaginaire du ballet romantique. Le deuxième acte est l’exemple-type du « ballet blanc », quasiment abstrait. Mais ce ballet offre surtout une recherche expressive d’une prodigieuse finesse. On peut citer notamment la scène de la folie (Giselle, jeune paysanne trompée par un homme issu d’une classe supérieure, perdra la raison et la vie en découvrant sa perfidie) ou encore le rôle des willis, fantômes des jeunes filles mortes avant leurs noces. Elles se livrent à une danse effrénée tout en restant impalpables, d’où un travail vertigineux sur le poids et l’énergie : comme le rappelle Ghislaine Thesmar, grande interprète de Giselle, « ce ballet nous apprend à danser la danse classique avec une sensation beaucoup plus vraie, plus organique ». Une expérience aussi forte pour le spectateur que pour les danseurs.
