La vie gambade et bataille, parfois chamade en folles incartades et brusques cabrioles… C’est le désir qui s’ébroue à même le corps, l’amour qui crisse sur la peau ou la folie qui vrille les chairs jusqu’à l’âme. La Giselle de Mats Ek, paysanne ingénue, folâtre dans les prés, libre des bienséances qui ferrent les gestes en bonnes manières et se donne au prince Albrecht, venu s’amuser des cœurs tendres de la campagne. Abandonnée aussitôt que conquise par l’inconséquent séducteur, elle sera brisée par le chagrin et perdra la raison. Dans sa relecture du ballet romantique chorégraphié en 1841 par Jules Perrot et Jean Coralli, le chorégraphe suédois imprime dans le mouvement le tumulte intime des êtres et exacerbe la violence qu’exercent les bourgeois trop élégants et moqueurs face à cette fille aux pieds nus. « Il y a sous la fable, beaucoup de relations complexes d’ordre social et spirituel : je voulais reprendre cela avec mes propres mots. » raconte-t-il. Créée en 1982 et entrée au répertoire du Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon en 2009, cette version contemporaine est elle-même devenue une référence.
