Chef-d’œuvre du ballet romantique, Giselle offre à son interprète la possibilité de révéler toutes les facettes de son talent chorégraphique et théâtral. Ramassé en deux actes efficaces qui deviendront le modèle du genre, la bluette pastorale annonçant « l’acte blanc » aussi abstrait dans sa rigueur gestuelle qu’impressionnant dans sa dimension surnaturelle, le ballet a donc pour lui la concision du livret inventé par le poète Théophile Gautier (avec Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges), et le génie chorégraphique de Jean Coralli et Jules Perrot. Conçu en un temps record sur la musique d’Adolphe Adam, il raconte l’histoire d’une jeune villageoise trompée par Albrecht, un Prince qui la courtise déguisé en paysan. La vérité, révélée par son fiancé éconduit, lui fait perdre la raison et la vie. Au deuxième acte, elle jaillit de sa tombe pour rejoindre les wilis, spectres de jeunes filles mortes d’amour. Ballet « fantastique » à la profondeur psychologique inégalée, Giselle est un chef-d’œuvre qui a su traverser le temps.
