C’est l’emblème absolu du Ballet romantique. Créé en 1840, Giselle a fixé dans les esprits l’idéal de la ballerine évanescente, sur pointe, exécutant des arabesques éthérées. François Gremaud s’attaque à ce monument de la danse classique avec la danseuse hollandaise Samantha van Wissen, qui a fait ses armes à Rosas, la compagnie d’Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker. Dans une conférence dansée, elle réinvestit le ballet dans une version comique et décrypte l’esthétique de la suspension, sur laquelle repose cette œuvre. En laissant se déployer une danse libre et fluide, la danseuse réincarne ce fantasme de corps, ce fantôme insaisissable. François Gremaud dévoile avec cet opus le second volet de son triptyque consacré aux grands rôles féminins tragiques, aux côtés de Phèdre ! (2017) pour le théâtre – délicieuse réussite – et de Carmen pour l’Opéra, qui sera créé ultérieurement.
