Giselle, jeune paysanne abusée par un prince, perd la raison – et la vie. Elle rejoint le royaume des Willis (les fantômes des jeunes femmes mortes avant leurs noces), où le prince se voit condamné à danser jusqu’à la mort : Giselle danse avec lui pour l’aider à survivre jusqu’aux premiers rayons du jour, qui le délivreront. De ce ballet romantique mythique, le Suédois Mats Ek a tiré en 1982 une relecture à couper le souffle. Il fait de Giselle la demeurée du village, trahie par un playboy citadin : elle finit dans un asile psychiatrique, où les blouses d’infirmières remplacent les tutus blancs des willis. Pour le jeune homme, la visite à l’asile sera un voyage initiatique, une descente dans les tréfonds de la vanité et du cœur humain. Le Ballet de l’Opéra National de Lyon donne cette version de Giselle au Château de Versailles : c’est l’une des rares occasions de voir cette pièce marquante de la danse contemporaine.
