Lorsque, dans la chaleur naissante de l’été, un soir de juin 1841, Carlotta Grisi glissa pour la première fois sur la scène de l’Opéra de Paris, que sa silhouette vaporeuse se mêla aux willis virginales… sans doute alors qu’un étrange frisson parcourut le public. Jamais avait-on senti semblable émotion. Chorégraphié par Jean Coralli et Jules Perrot sur une partition d’Adolphe Adam, Giselle allait devenir la quintessence du ballet romantique. Peut-être parce que cette Giselle est le rêve d’un poète. C’est en feuilletant un livre sur l’Allemagne, en se perdant dans les forêts imaginaires et la légende des willis, que Théophile Gautier écrivit le livret de ce ballet en deux actes, avec la complicité du dramaturge Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges. Il y brode alors tous les thèmes du romantisme : pastorale amoureuse qui s’achève en tragédie, inversion des identités sociales, irruption d’un monde fantastique peuplé de créatures immatérielles, rédemption par la force de l’amour. Une nouvelle fois, le ballet de l’Opéra de Paris exhale toute la virtuosité, le mystère et la douceur mélancolique de ce chef-d’œuvre.
