L’Antiquité est pour l’art lyrique une ressource inépuisable. Laurent Pelly a souvent joué dans ses mises en scène d’opéra de ce regard plus ou moins volontairement distancié – plutôt plus dans Platée de Rameau ou La Belle Hélène d’Offenbach. Alors que son Ariane à Naxos de Strauss vient d’être reprise à l’Opéra Bastille, Laurent Pelly quitte les rives de l’Égée pour les bords du Nil, et il rend pleinement justice à l’historicité fantaisiste de Giulio Cesare quand il y voit « une rêverie sentimentale et archéologique » qu’il a décidé, avec sa dramaturge Agathe Mélinand, de situer dans les réserves d’un musée. Il est vrai que l’Antiquité est ici, plus peut-être que dans aucun autre opéra de Haendel, avant tout un prétexte, une toile de fond pour dérouler le jeu des passions – haine autant qu’amour – des personnages. Et quels personnages ! Jules César, incarné par Lawrence Zazzo (le contre-ténor a déjà tenu le rôle au Met notamment), est héros de péplum avant l’heure. Le rôle de Cléopâtre, qui réclame beauté vocale et élégance scénique, sera chanté en alternance par les coloratures Natalie Dessay et Jane Archibald. Autre promesse d’élégance musicale : la présence dans la fosse d’Emmanuelle Haïm à la tête de son ensemble Le Concert d’Astrée.
