Ça devient une manie. Longtemps terra incognita pour les continentaux du jazz, le royaume de sa majesté envoie depuis quelque temps des bataillons de Britons, du genre surdoués. GoGo Penguin fait partie de cette « new wave », des plus hétéroclite en termes de styles, mais dont le trait commun est quand même une culture musicale tout terrain, plutôt « street ». Ou plutôt un certain sens du son, de la production, qui raisonne en creux chez beaucoup. C’est le cas du groupe originaire de Manchester qui manie aussi bien les breakbeats que les lignes claires du piano, qui marie réminiscences classiques et improvisations telluriques. Si l’instrumentation est celle de l‘archétype trio avec piano, basse, batterie, les rythmes, eux, viennent des marges de l’électro. Leur second album, après un initial Fanfares en 2012, confirme cette tendance : V2.0 a été nominé en 2014 au Mercury Prize, jury qui scanne les talents toutes catégories en Angleterre. A découvrir.
